NOTES ON THE RACING. DEELEY RIDES FOUR WINNERS. (Br TeleirraDh.-SD.iclal CormDonaant.t Nelson, March 20, Tho annual meeting of tho Nelson Jockey Club took place to-day in glorious weather. Not a breath of wind was felt, and not a cloud was observed in the sky. Under the circumstances it was not surprising to find a large crowd present, arid a suitable reward in the shape of good racing fell to them. Prior to the start of the racing a local resident, named C. Haggitt, was badly kicked by Daunton, and rendered insensible for some time. Mr. R. E. Harley mado his first appearance at the meeting as starter, and dtd remarkably well. Secretary J. Glen had the arrangements for the conduct of tho meeting well in'hand, and the totalisator machine, which handled a very largo sum of money, was run by Mr. H. James, of Greymouth. A feature of this department was the promptitude which was displayed in hoisting the figures. In the Trial Hack Race, tho Wellingtonowned Mediterranean, who has been ■ off the scene for a considerable time, was bached down to a very short price, but after jumping out well he failed to go on, and at the finish was outside the placed horses. Amborstonc, a good-looking bay gelding by St. Ambrose, look charge from' Excitement soon after the tapes were'released, aiid this pair had the race to themselves. Bridegroom, who hails from Takaka, was third, and the favourite fourth.

A big field of sixteen runners contested the first Trot, and the favourite, Chinaman, had an easy victory. Tho llutttraincd Grattan Chimes was a pood second favourite, but the Australian-bred gelding broko at a critical stage, and spoilt his chances. After this he was not persevered with, and finished fourth. ITe is likely to improve considerably on that form, and may be seen to more advantage on a different track.

The Nelson Jockey Club Handicap, which in recent years has taken the place of the Cup, saw five runners go to the post. Waipunui and Astonishment wero evenly backed, and Beacon also enme in for strong support. A beautiful start was effected just below the stand, and Starter Harley was applauded. Beacon was tho pacemaker down the back, with Tan San and Wildbird following. With half a mile to go, Waipunui and Astonishment moved up, nnd a furlong off the post the Greymouth horse took charge, but Astonishment failed to come on. Beacon disputed every yard of the ground - , but Waipunui finished well, and beat him by a couple of lengths.

There were only three runners in the Bone Hack Handicap, tho Sir Laddo gelding, Ladrone, being preferred to Daunton, with Terakoho the outsider of the Daunton had a good lead with half tho journey gone, but in tho straight Hatch, sitting still on Ladrone, passed him, and at the finish won nicely by half a length, Terakoho was twenty lengths away.

The Second Trot went to a rank outsider in Stella Leigh, who covered far more ground than anything elso in the race, but still had enough in reserve to stall off the favourite Ding Dong. The Hutt horso broke threo times, or he might have reversed positions with the winner.

Portland Lady, with Deeley in the saddle, was a good favourite in the Telegraph Handicap. There wore only five runners, and from a good start the favourite dashed off in front, while Mt. Victoria was slow to move. At the bottom bend, the latter had taken up second position, but could make no impression on the leader, who, though sho ran wide at the turn, came on full of going, and won comfortably. Bridegroom, who came fast on the rails, was third. King Aphis broke a fjirth, and had to bo pulled up. Tho time, Imin. lsec, makes the winner out to be very smart.

B. Deeley rode his third winner in the Grandstand Handicap, when Sinapis beat Curator and Seraphic. The Blen-heim-owned filly looked to have done well on the trip, and her party was very confident of tho result. Seraphic received good support, on the strength of a good gallop with Portland Lady, in which tho latter was easily defeated. Curator, after breaking the tapes twice, eventually got off with'.the others, but after leading into the straight he went under to a good finishing run by Sinapis. M. M'Donald, on .Aetna, cut down one of tho posts on the journey, but no damago was done to horse or rider.

Portland Bill was Deeley'ti mount, and was heavily supported, in the Welter Hack Race. Ho began smartly,- nud with Mediterranean ran away from the othors. Coming into the straight full of running, the favourite shook off Mediterranean, and won in the easiest possible manner.

A feature of tho meeting was tho fine riding of Deeley, who, out of (ivc mounts, was first past the post four times. The whole of the jockeys riding wore a crepe band on their onus, out of respect to tho memory of A.. Whittnlccr, who was killed at Taeroa Inst Saturday. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY.
