SUNDAY SPORTS: COUNCILLOR RESIGNS FROM COMMITTEE.
IBj Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, March 20. The usual meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. A. Nash, presiding. Tho Men's Social 1 Club was granted tho free use of tho Municipal Hall for a concert in aid of the funds, and the free use of the sport 3 ground was granted for cycle sports in aid of tho Brass Band Fund.
Pascal Brothers wero granted permission to lay off a street, ono and a half chains wide, through tho education reserve, as a continuation of Cuba Street, and out at right angles'to Main Street, the connection with the latter street to bo one chain wide.
A number of tenders for small works wero accepted, and the engineer was instructed'to prepare several streets for tarring. The Public Works Committeo was instructed to frame a remit to the Municipal Conference to alter the licensing law so that candidates for licensing committees can withdraw. Two of the candidates at the last licensing election for Palmerston were willing to withdraw and save the cost of the election (.£67), but the Licensing Act would not permit this being done.
The engineer was granted leave of absence to attend a meeting of local bodies' enginoers in Wellington on Thursday and Friday.
Councillor Nathan moved his resolution that the motion to raise ,£69,000 for tramtray construction and electric lighting ho rescinded. Tho motion was seconded pro forma, and after discussion was put and lost, only Councillor Nathan voting for it. Councillor Stubbs's notico of motion: "That the resolution giving permission to train on the sports ground on Sundays up to noon," was also dealt with, the motion being defeated. Councillor Stubhs then tendered his resignation as a member of the Reserves Committee, of which ho was chairman. At tho conclusion of the meeting, tho Mayor gave notice that he would move at "tho next meeting: "That the previous resolution e? the council to raise J:(i9,000 for a tramway service and electric lighting scheme be rescinded, and that the tramwav scheme submitted by Mr. Black, at a cost of .MO.OOO, ho plated before tho ratepavers." NOTES. The children nttending the Campbell Street Public School have subscribed JM towards tho English Fresh Air Fund. A Chinaman died in a Pnlmerstou laundry last night. He had only arrived from Wanganui yesterday. As he had been attended by a medical nian, who hns given a certificate as to the cause of death, mi inquest will not bo necessary. A number of members of tho Manawntn Cycle Club proposo to visit Mastortnn next week to nssist in forming a Mute; Cycle Club for tho Wairarapa. A military examination is at present being hold here by Captain Robinson, the candidates being Captains J: Mounsev (J Battery), W. G. Ashworlh (Ctli .Mounted Regiment), and Lieut. J. A. Cameron (Tth Infantry Regiment). At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, a number of Maoris ventilated a grievance over liie erection of a dividing fence.
