REPORT FROM NEW BOARD. ' INCREASES IN RUNNING COST. Tho new Board of Management which has taken over the control nf the City Tramways has presented its first report, which will come before, the City Council (his evening. Tho method of setting out details has been made much more simple, making it easier for the layman to discover tho causes of increased expenditure. The statement covers a period of eleven months up to March 1, 1912, with comparative figures for tho snme period of last year. Following are the details for the period. Id. from tramways, and the increase in working expenses to ,£5700, including .£5515 4s. lid. from tramways, and in capital charges to =£1018 45., making a total increase in cost of working of .£7324 Is. The surplus is therefore decreased as compared with last year by ,£2579 19s. 3d. Increases of Expenditure, In the increased traffic expedituro (,£1700), the increases aro due to:—Wages, motormen and conductors, i£DOl; superintendence, ,£187; wages of other traffic employees, ,£201; cleaning, oiling, and sanding cars, .£305; fuel, power, light, and water, etc., .£135. Total, .£1789. The opening of the Wadestown line and tho Karori extension are accountable for a large proportion of above increases. The increase of general expenditure, amounting to JE3GGO, is due to:—Salaries increase and extra clerical assistance, .£200; accident insurance, .£163. Total, .£3OB. Tho incroase of repairs and maintenance expenditure, ,£2997, is due to:— Permanent wav, .£1400; overhead equipment, J2147; cars, ,£1612. Total, ,£3159. The increase of power expenditure amounted to ,£654, comprised in station wages, .£237; fuel, .£791.- Total, .£IO2B. Tho number of units supplied this year was 5,255,501, as compared with last year's total of 4,910,025, showing ah increase of 345,470. Tho power expenses per unit this year aro .75d., as compared with .77d. last year. Following aro the statistics of car mileage run and number of passengers carried •.— Mileage. 1912. 1911. City 1,934,293 1,948,202 Karori 02,553 66,240 Karori Extension 32,175 — Miramar 28,050 31,291 Seatoun 22,733 22,138 The total mileage run in 1912 was 2,079,804, as compared with 2,067,437 in 1911. The increase in mileage run was 11,867. The total number of passengers carried was-In 1912, 21,331,359; in 1911, 20,762,739. The increaso in passengers carried was 568,020.
