WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By Teleffrapn.—Special CorrearonaenU Wanganui, March 20., Mr. W. J. Polsoni chairman of tho Wanganui County Council, is meeting much success in his campaign for the abolition of the road boards, under whose jurisdiction the county is parcelled out. Opposition to tho proposal is very small, and it is considered assured that the proposal will be carried. . The lion. T. Mackenzie and Dr. Fitchett, Public Trustee, spent tho morning here, and were driven round the town and suburbs. This was the first real glimpse of Wanganui either had had, previous visits being very short. Both expressed themselves surprised and greatly impressed at tho growing size and possibilities of the town. Word has been received that a police station will be established at Gonville, owing to the rapid increase in that suburb's population. Preliminary work for the erection of the plant for tho construction of the forro-concrete piles, etc., in connection with the new traffic bridge at Dublin Street is now completed, and, with tho driving of the first pile yesterday afternoon, the actual work of erecting tho structure itself was begun. The staff is now working day and night, and rapid progress is now looked for. Mr. W. A. Voitch, M.P., left to-day for "Wellington an connection wilh the Cabinet reconstruction meeting. Mr. Blackman, gas engineer at Masterron, is at present visiting Gonville on behalf of the Town Board, to report on tho question of establishing gas-works in that district. The work of duplicating the tramway lines owing to the need for an increased servico has begun to-day.
