CLANRICARDE ESTATES.
RESUMPTION BY THE CROWN. By Teleeraph—Press Association—CoDjrlEli: (Kec. March 20, 9.15 p.m.) London, March 20. Notice of the compulsory acquisition by the Crown of lands in Gahvay belonging to tho Marquis of Clanricarde has been gazetted at Dublin. The congested Districts Board offered JE228.075 for the property in question.
The Marquis of Clanricarde owns altogether some 57,000 acres. ; In the eighties a good deal was heard of him in Ireland. His estates in the southern part of Galway became tho theatre of one of the most determined revolts against rackrenting, and many wild scenes and wilder crimes took place on the banks of the Shannon, about Portumna and Woodford. The Marquis himself was never seen there, and the half-finished marble palace at Portumna, on extravagance of the first marquis, was never tenanted, tho owner preferring the seclusion of his bachelor chambers in London, and leaving the conduct of tho struggle with tho tenantry to his agents.
