THE COMPETITIONS.
FOR OCTOBER-NOVEMBER NEXT. Thero will bo considerable interest in ilio carnival that is being promoted by tho Now Zealand Competitions Society to be held at the Toivn Hall in October and November next. Even now, over six months ahead, intending competitors have been asking for the programme in order that they may at onco begin a course of preparation. It is expected that the full programme will be ready for publication (in detail) towards the end of the month. In the meantime wo are able to publish the programme of pieces set for the elocutionary sections by Mr. ,T. F. Montague, of Auckland. They are as follow:— Recitation for boys, under 14—"Planting Trees." Recitation for girl?, under 11—"Domestic Asides." Recitation for boys under 10—"Vitai Leinpndn" (Nawbolt). Recitation for girls under 16—"The Chambered Nautilus" (Wendell Holmes). Recitation for boys under 11 (for those who have never won a first prize)—" The Slave's Dream" (Longfellow). Recitation for girls (ditto)—" The Brook" (Tennyson). Shakespearean Recital for men. Test— "Othello's Defence." Shukesnearean dialogue—Scene from "Riohard III" (Act I), between Richard and Lady Anne. " Dramatic recital for gentlemen—"Herve Riel" (Browning). Dramatic recital for ladies—"Paul Revere's Ride" (I.ongfellow). Proparcd reading for lady or gentleman—"A Sea Boat" (Ruskin). Shakespearean recital for ladies who have never won a prize—(l) Duke's Speech and 12) Epilogue from "As You Like It." Ditto for gentlemen—The "Seven Ages" speech from "As You T ike It" and "Prospero's Speech from "The Tempest" (Act Drunintic recital for gemtlemen—"Godiva" (Tennyson). Ditto for ladies—Chorus in "Atalanta in C'al.vdon" (Swinburne). Recitation for Bo.v Scouts—"The Ballad of .foliu Nicholson." The pieces selected for the big niannforle test, the first prize for which will be a maKiiificent 111-guinea Chappol picuin, will be Clmnin's "Grand Polonaise" and Dohler's "Nocturne."
