CITY MARKETS.
A STRONGER TONE EVIDENT. During the closing days of the present week a stronger tone was noticeable at tho Blair and Allen Street markets, particularly for pears, choice dessert sorts selling from Gs. to Bs. lid. per case. So far peaches have not shown any disposition to improve iu value. Heavy shipments continue to arrive, extra choice sorts only realising up to 2s. Gd. per case, the bulk selling at Is. fid. to Is. 9d. A shipment of South Australian grapes camo to hand yesterday, and met with an excellent demand, tho greater portion selling at 15s. per box. Transhipments of Island oranges reached the market on Tuesday last, and prices ranged from 6s. to 15s. per 9-inch case, according to condition. A good many cases were over-ripe. The Sydney steamer only landed a very small consignment on Thursday. A few eases of passion fruit realised up to 10s. per case, and extra choice pineapples sold as high as 13s. per case. Watermelons quitted at from 6d. to Is. each. Localgrown white passion fruit is noir available, and a fen- cases sold during the week at as. Cd. Quinces are not in heavy demand, the ruling price being 3s. . per packer case. Choice samples of dessert apples, such as Cox's Orange Pippins, met with fair demand, the best samples realising from 7s. to Bs. Other sorts are selling at from ss. to 6s. Cd. Cooking apples are rather plentiful at 3s. Gd. to 4s. Local Marie Louise aro moeting with good competition at 7s. to Bs. per caso. Other dessert sorts Gs. to Bs., Bergermots 3s. Gd. to ds. Cd. Cooking sorts bring 4s. 6d. to Cs. per case. Dessert plums sell at 3s. to 4s. Tomatoes are cpming in freely from tho Lower Hutt, choice fruit realising as high as Gs. during the week, but the bulk making 4s. to ss. There,is only a moderate demand for blackberries at 2UI. per lb. Cucumbers (double cases) realise from ss. to Gs. There is a good demand for Cape gooseberries at ijd. to ° The market is well supplied with localgrown onions, which make 7s. to Bs. pel cental bag. Spring onions aro selling al 9d. to Is. per dozen bundles. Cabbage; are in heavy supply at Gd. to Is. per sack, Extra choice cauliflowers are worth Gs. tc i) 3. per sack, and rod cabbage 3s. to 4s. pei sack. Soutlmrn potatoes, free from blight, bi'in" fl.i. to 11s. por 6ack. Grcon pea; sell at 3s. 6d. to ss. por lrolf-sack, but the season is nearing the end. French beans meet with a good (>nle at 3s, Gd. to ss, per half-sack, and there is a moderat< demand for parsnips at is. Gd. to 5s White turnips are in over-supply at Is Gd. to' 2s. Gd. per sack. Carrots bring 3s = Gd. to Gs.; choice lettuce, 2s. Gd. to 3s case; marrows, 3s. to 3s. Gd. Back; pump kins, 4s. to 53.; beet, 2s. Gd. to 3s. Gd. choico whito celery, 2s. to 3s. per dozer bundles; swedes, 2s. to 2s. Gd. per cwt spinach, 2s. Gd. per case; rhubarb, Is. tc "s per dozen bundles. Egg supplies havi been light during the week, values yes terday being Is. Gd. per dozen, with a Root denurnd. The markets are well suppliec with poultry, prices for all lines lieiiif extremely low. Hens me soiling at 2s. tc 3a. a pair, and other lines are on a pai with this.
