THEATRE ROYAL. The popularity of Fosola, tho Indian conjuror, nud tho strong supporting company showing with him at tho Theatre Royal is demonstrated nightly by tho crowded audiences in tho theatre. Fasola's net never fails to provplto applause, and always it leaves tho peoplo who witness it amazed and bewildered. The current programme at the Vivian Street Rink last night contained somo amusing items. "One Way to Win," by the Lubin Company, is tho lovo story of a penniless artist, who meets with a clever reporter, who, being somewhat of a comedian, and scenting amusement, helps the lore-stricken one to obtain the hand of liis divinity. In the "Innocent Burglar," threo policemen provide a comedy to provoke immoderate lauglitor, while of tho more serious items, "Pull for tho Shore, Sailor" is the best. Tho seaside setting is excellent, and the moral of. tho story a curse upon intoxicants. "A Losson in Liquid Air," "Beautiful Vintage," and "Baby and the Stork" are also good films. JANSEN, THE MAGICIAN. Jansen, who is recognised as ono of tho world's foremost magicians aud transformists, will be seen here at the Opera House, under tho direction of Portus and Talbot, for a short 6eaeon, conimoncing on Wednesday, March 27, aud will present each evening demonstrations of hia complete knowledge of legerdemain. Over fifty tons of apparatus, special scenio and electrical effects will bo found in this mystifying show. The illusions aro most sensational. Among the other actors with tho Jansen Company are Dβ Hallis and Valora, the American duo of comedy jugglere and entertainers, who jugglo with tho furniture, floral decorations, tableware, and other movables with tho greatest ease. They havo entertained the most fastidious audiences in tho larger cities of America, and were last season one of the leading. features at the Now York Hippodrome. It is said to be a show that will please everybody. Box plans will open at the Dresden Piano Cb. on Wednesday, March 20. "BEAUTY AND THE BARGE." Allan. Hamilton's Company opens a season at the Opera Houso next Tuesday evening in W. W. Jacob's refreshing farce in three acts entitled "Beauty and the Barge." Tho story of Captain Barley's wooing forms tho subject of many 'amusing complications, and brightly played by a combination of clever people constitutes a delightful evening's entertainment. Many fine character studies have been given to the Australian stage- by tho popular comedian Mr. Charles Brown, but he is 'said to eclipse all his previous efforts in his delineation of tho skipper of the Heart in Hand. Critics state that Miss Beatrice Holloway shines brightly in the character of Ethel Smedley, and is charmingly natural throughout. The scenery depicting a pretty garden, the interior of tho 61d Ship Inn, and the upper reaches of the River Thames is a veritable triumph. The mechanical effects include the barge originally built for the lato Robert Brough, and Mr. Hamilton has providod everything else necessai-f for a successful production. Tho advance booking at the Dreeden'Piano Company is most satisfactory. SONG RECITAL. On Wednesday, Maroh 27, a eong recital .will be given by Mr. Hamilton Hodges, the well-known baritone, now resident in Wellington. Mr. Hodges will sing songs by Schubert, Strauss, Masse, Godard, a group of five songs by American composers, and tho song cycle "Maud," by Arthur Somcrvell. Mr. Baxter Buckley will bo tho solo pianist, and will play the Chopin Fantasia and the MacDowcll Polonaise.. Mrs. E.:HL,Quereo will play the accompaniments. ' Tho' booking is at the , Dresden where seats can now bo obtained. THE NEW THEATRE. Messrs. MacMahon and Donnelly's continuous picture entertainment at The New Theatre, Manners Street, was crowded at all sessions yesterday afternoon and evening, the sensational dramagraph "A Victim of the Mormons" proving a most effective draw. Tho story is a thrilling one, and tho acting of a high order. Tho exciting pursuit of a Mormon pastor who abducts a beautiful girl is a succession of surprises. The victim's brother and fiance follow the Mormon across tho Atlantic and through the United States to Utah. Among tho features of this production is a Bceno in which a wireless operator is at work on an Atlantic liner, a full Marconi equipment being displayed. Tho supporting iteme yesterday included "Handy Mon nt Gun Practice," depicting field artillery at work and big shell practico, "A Warrior's Treachery" (a picturosque story of love among tho Red Indians, by the Bison Company), and "Arabella Joins the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty" (a skrioking comedy), "A Victim of the Mormons" will be repeated at all sessions to-day and in. the evening. SHORTT'S THEATRE, "The Mystery of Blyth House," a story of a famous detectivo tracing tho murder of an uncle through his nephew, is tho best item on the present programmo as far as tho dramatic films are concerned. In tho scenic studies, "A Trip to the Arctic Regions" is ono of the best of its kind that have in Wellington. Tho huge icebergs, ice-drifts, and floes mako up a beautiful picture view. In tho comiq films, "A \Tell-wafchcd Houso" is tho best, and causes much froo laughter. To-day a splendid mntineo eihibition will be given for the children. KING'S THEATRE. In celebration of the second anniversary of the King's Theatre, a specially popular programme was screened last night. Tho "Octoroon" was the star item. This fine picture has already been roviewed. It is founded on the old play of the same name by Boucicault, which, when first produced, was so popular in America. "The Heart of Silver Xeaf" is an interesting study of Red Indian life; "Tho Elopement, taken from Mr. Lomax's famous pioture, allows a glimpse into the lato Georgian poriod, set with the picturesque dresses of tho men and women of tho time. Before leaving the theatre last night each lady was presented with a souvenir of tho evening in the form of an illustrated booklot containing views of Wellington. "Madamo Sans Gene," an adaptation of the celebrated play, the rights of which aro held by West's, Ltd., will be screened at tho King's Theatre on Monday night. Madame Rojano, tho famous French actress; sustained tho principal role in the production. Madame Rcjano has not previously acted before tho camera, and the opportunity of seeing the film reproduction of her justly famed presentation should not bo missed. Special incidental music has boon arranged for tho production.
