In December, 1306, Ernest Frank Boyes, chief y«oraan and signalling instructor on tho Pioneer, fell in lovo with New Zealand and with one of Now Zealand's equally charming women. He, therefore, decided to forsake the sea, and married and settled in Hamilton; under an assumed name. The authorities on tho Pioneer issued a warrant for him to Iμ delivered up, but years rolled on, and, in the meantime, ho established a prosperous business in Hamilton, and became the father of children and owner of land. It gradually got rumoured round that the name Boyes went under was assumed, and this led to his arrest, charged with deserting from the Pioneer in 1906. Boyes has been remanded till Monday, as no reply has been received from the authorities on the Pioneer. As Boyes's t.mo expired two years ago, and as tho warship has been reoommissioned in the meantime, it ie quite ■ possible the authorities may not want the now hapny settler.
