Cable advire received liy the local agents for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company announces the arrival nt Monte Video on Monday evening last of 11.M.5. Tainui. The liner left Wellington on February 22, and is due at London on April 5. . LARGEST COLLIER IN THE WORLD. _ The American Admiralty is just completing the building of a steel collier, which is stated to be the largest collier in the world. She is 542 ft. long, 65ft. broad, and 39ft. 6in. dc?p. Ncr displacement is 19,400 tons, and she is intended to' supply the navy with stores and coal. After careful investigation by the Navy Department of the working and the utility of the porhydrometer, an order has been plactid for fitting the vessel with this instrument. It may be cxp'aiued that the parhydrometer is an automatic device for weighing coal. JAPAN'S MERCHANT SERVICE. Th« Nippon Yusen Kaisha. which has offered very effective coniuctition to tonic of the leading English shipping companies trading to the Far East, ii to be a still more■ insistent rival'in the future, states an exchange. It is announced that the N.Y.K. proposes to purchase the fleet of the Imperial Chinese Merchant Marino Company. The Nippon Yiicen Kaisha has already a! fleet of seventy-nine vessels, some of which are of a considerable tonnage. A substantial proportion of the fleet has been built in Japanese yards, while the remaining vessels were laid down in this country, with the exception of one or two which were contracted for in Cermany. With the additional tonnage which is about to come under its control, the standing of the Ninpon Yusen Kaisha will lie increased, and while it is not to be supposed that the main service will bs altered, it is nuitc clear thit. the company's subsidiary itineraries will be extended. The Navua is duo back at Wellington from Wesport on Sunday. An expected arrival in port from London, via way ports, on Sunday is the Tyror liner Whakarua. At 9 p.m. yesterday the Union Company's Monna left Lyttolton for Wellington. She is due in port about 9 a.m. to-day. and will berth at the Queen's Wharf, No. 1 north. She sails for Sydney direct at 8 , p.m. About the end of this month the collier Wlnngapc is to load at Newcastle for Wellington. From Grcymouth the Union Company's steamer Rakanoa takes a load of timber to Melbourne and Sydney. When she hns completed loading at Westport, the Wairuno. will proceed to Auck- , land. From the latter port she will go to Newcastle to load for New Zealand ■ ports. Yesterday the dredge Mawhera was taken off the Wellington Patent Slip. The Wost port dredge Eiicon Ward, which arrived at Wellington yesterday, will occupy the cradle to-day.
