The weather was dull, but remained fine for tho Cup day at Napier. The going was hotter than was expected, and some good gallops were recorded. The attendauco was well up to the average. A feature of the meeting was the fine riding of Deeley, who steered threo winners, . two of the wins being alone due to his excellent horsemanship. Nyland sustained sevcro injuries to both his ligamont.s while contesting tho Cup, and it is unlikely that he will race again. Lamsdorf, who is in tho samo stable as Merrio Lad, was the only withdrawal from the Hack Hurdles field. Seaman and Merrie Lad were oyenly backed, and they finished in the dividends. Tho latter is a bold jumper, but Seaman again fenced badly. Half a mile from homo Merrio Lad, who had been in command the whole way, was joined by Seamau, but the Wauganui gelding cut thn next fence right out, and Merrie Lad then got n useful break. Seaman caino again in the straight, but was no trouble to Merrio Lad, who is tho makings of a useful horse. Makara (A. Oliver), who had Number 1 position, was a better favourite than Thrave in the Esk Hack Handicap. The former and Weo Rose anticipated tho barrier, and got a break of four lengths around tho bend. Miss Augusta and Thrave were nearest to tho leaders, with the- others strung out. Thrave, Parktidc, and Parewanui made good eiforts in' the straight, but Makara, though stopping badly, scrambled home by a length. Miss Augusta spoilt whatever chanco she possessed by running out badly at the turn into the straight. The Cup field was reduced by the withdrawal of Sublime, Rill, Vi, and To Puia. Nyland closed up at a very short price, but when looking all over a winner he suddenly was seen to stop, and when pulled up it was found that ho had broken down badly. Just after passing the post tho first time, Loch Mabcu got on to another horse's heels, and came down. Tho early running was made by War Scare, with Composed tailed off. With five furlongs to go Ideaiisci joined tho leader, who «soon fell back, and at this juncture Composed also went up to tlio front. Just before the straight was reached Nylond and Aberbrolhock were together, but hero tho mishap referred to above took place. Ariom got through on tho rails at the straight entrance, and j in a good finish beat Idealism by a neck. Aberbrothock wns a poor third, then came | Seatondale and Composed. Marimba, a sturdy-looking two-year-old, full sister to Condor, and who also hail; fiom Karamu, was niado a strong public fancy in the Trial Hack Stakes, and she woji comfortably from A'gakau, with First Marshal beaten off. Ngakau was tho first to move from a splendid start, but favoured by her light weight Marimba soon vent to the front, and led tlio whole way. A fine finish was witnessed in the Welter Handicap, in which Ardfert (Deeley) beat Pan Pluio (F. D. Jones) by a'head. The •latter was a little bit. unfortunate at tlie turn, or she might have reversed positions with the winner. Culiintcu led at tho straight, followed by Montiform, villi Aidl't'it just ahead of San I'hiie. The leaders swung out as they entered the straight, and (he alert Deeley got up on tint fence, but Jones was too late when Iryiiij! for the same advantage, and had to go ro'.md the, field. 'ih« .qunrtet were in a lino half-way down the straight. ■ Montiform vvn» The first lo give way and then Ciillinaii al.-o stopped under pressure. The other pair fought out a great finish which wont to Ardfert by a head. Cullinnn was two lengths away followed by Montiform. The Sapling Stakes gave Eocene an opportunity of showing how much she has improved of Inte. The field wns iwf a strong one, and several i>f the runners wero well backed. Warlighl was tho first lo show out from a good start, but she was soon sent back, and The Nile, wiili Eocene, led round the bend. Eocene was first into the stnighl where The Nile ran very wide and lost her position. King's Favourite was then in second place, but Muster Kilchenin finis';od'tlit< stronger .nnd got second place. Win-light was fourth, followed by J.cckwodd and Kvadno. The Hack Welter was the be.st of good thing.- for Mang-irea, , who <eeincil much improved for her raw at Danuevirke. The winner was badly placed over Hie Erst, mi furlongs, but she put in i> woniu'ful run Iα tlio straight and iron. m.
convincing stylo by a couple of lengths from Moutoa Girl. Missilo niiulo the running to the turn, but failed uut of it in tho run homo. Grandee was also prominent at tho turn, but failed to finish. Tli3 public wont strongly for Faunus in tho Flying Handicap, but third position was tho best (ho Knr.iinu gelding could get. Jle went very fast from tho barrier, but Lord Possible soon joined him and the pair got a big break on the field. The favourite was done with at the turn, but Lord Possible fame mi full of running, and won comfortably. J. here was a groat finish for second place, and Sublime, Fauuus, and Maori King finished in a line. .Maori lung, who had began slowly, was nwarded the position with Fainins and Sublime in that order. Easy began slowly and was last into tho straight, but finished on well. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Napier, March 13.
