THE PRICE OF BREAD.
,» THE EXTRA lIALF-PENXY. Mr. \V. A. Kellow, president of the lla.-tiT Bakers' Association, was consulted yesterday in respect lo a statement which has 'been given publicity setting out that Iheic is nt present a grocer .sclliii(! bread in the city and (on his own statement) making a" fair profit on his output, whilst, the regular "trade" is charging the public 3.U1. Mr. Kellow, recognising the niis:ippri"lipnsion which Mich u statement unchallenged might engender, say-- that it is n very old idea in trade fur a person to keep a "catch line" with which to induce business 'and it is very probable that this is what is being done m the ease under notice. It is quite j>o?sible for :i man not delivering tlio article from door lo door amkhaving no carts, carters, and horses to pay for to sell for spot cash bread at .'ld. per loaf, but that man would make little, if any, profit on the present price of flour. There were, too, other considerations, such as the fact that .spot cash over the counter is being asked (which is an effective way of avoiding had debts). At present it would be impossible to manufacture, bread and deliver it in any part of tho city at 3d. a loaf and make a profit.
