ELECTRIC LIGHTING OF THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.

The neiv Children's Hospital, opened yesterday, is lighted by electricity throughout, Osram lamps being exclusively used; the six main wards cud the four small wards,, in addition to being provided with the usual lights, arc provided with wall-plugs between each bed from which portable hand lamps may bo taken, thus enabling any patient to be attended lo at night without lighting the whole of the ward and disturbing the other patients. 'Die lijrhts in the centre of the wards are provided with special switches, which enable them to be "turned down 10r. , ." The kitchens attached to each ward have been provided with electiicity points fur cooking, heating, and water-boiling, also for electric irons (used to iron out the ircshly-wnshe.l and sterilised liniment bandages used in the dressing of patients' wounds, etc.), on these points will bo used electric ovens, electric sterilisers, electric saucepans (for making broth or beef tea and for boiling milk, ote.); all this will be. carried out cleanly and quickly without fumes or smell, and without unduly heating the room. The operating theatre is also provided with electric heating points, on which can be used sterilisers (for sterilisins the surgical and other instruments), Electric cauterising caii also bo carried on from these points, and extra hot water can be quickly (in 20 seconds) procured from the same"source. The shnckroom adjacent to the operating thcat'ro is also provided with a heating or power point, on which Hie same appliances can be used, also batteries for shocking, electric ir.iissage, high-tension and magnetic treatment. The institution is also fitted-with telephones communicating with the doctor's residence, the matron's.quarters, tho main kitchen, and other parts of tho main hospital. The whole of the electric light and heating is controlled from a massive marble dist'ributjm board, situated in the corridor near tho entrance. This was designed by Mr. J. Kirk.vood, and its fittings are" all nickel-plated and show up to great, advantago through tho lead-light doors. The whole of the above insinuation* were carried out by KirUwcod s Electric Light Company of New Zealand, Lid., of 88 Willis Street, city, to the plans prepared by its managing engineer (Mr. Kirhvflrid), and it involves work earned out under an entirely new system, which enabled tho linn to do the work cheaply and in a fel-elaw manner, and in such ii way that any of the wires may bf> withdrawn for examination in the future, without disturbing the building or fixtures. Tho practical part of the work has been carried out by the firm's foreman electrician, Mr. Cyril A. Cook.
