MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
4 (Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) NOT AN ABSCONDER, Arthur Joseph Wicks, charged with an indictable offence, appeared to answer a charge of having beta about to abscond while- on bail. Evidence was given that Wicks, who was a Wellington residsnt, had been ai rested m Dunedin. Wicks deposed that at thn time of his arrest he had been about to go aboard a train en roitto for Wellington. Ho had a rotnrn steamer ticket. His Worship remarked that Wicks had himself to blame for the incident, but it did not appear that defendant was about to abscond. Ho was 'discharged. THE STEAMER-TICKET. John Adams was charged with travelling from Nelson to Wellington on ths steamer Pateona, without paying his fare. Adams pleaded guilty, but sail that he had hoarded ths vessel, and after it had sailed he had found that he was without money to pay his fare. However, he \in« well ablo to pay the amount, and could got the moni'y. He was convicted and ordered to pay the fare (13s. "Od.). OTHER CASES. John Lowe was ordered to pay 7s. per week towards the maintenance of a certain child. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the complainant, and Mr. E. J. JTitzgibbon for the defendant. Mr. Fitzgibbon stated that defendant wished to oppose tho application, but his Worship said that owing b a defeat in tho Act defendant could not do so just then. Mr. Fitzgibbon then stated that he would immediately take proceedings to have the order upset. David Glen Barclay was fined 10s. for insobriety.
