The interest which has been taken in the new Children's Hospital, ever since wie idea of building one was first mooted, was Jnlly evidenced yesterday afternoon by the presence- of the lam number of peoplo at the openin= ceremony. Jlotors, taxis, hansoms, ani'i tho invaluable tramear, were nil great!" sought alter, and people were congratulating themselves that the weather had behaved in such a kindly fashion. Quantities of bunting draped the front of the new hospital, and over the entrance door was the inscription in bold letters, "King 1-Mward VII Memorial Hospital." One could not imagine a b?{ter tribute to the late King than that of dedicating a children's hospital to his memory. His Excellency the Governor, who performed the opening ceremony, was received by the Hospital Committee, which ineluded Jliss Richmond, and escorted to the verandah, where chairs were supposed to have been reserved for those .who had interested themselves so substantially in tho erection of the building. Hero several speeches were made, (he effect of them being somewhat lost by the loiul footfalls of people who entertained (hcnisehvs by wandering about inside, quite oblivious of tho annoyance they were causing to others. After the building had been declared formally open, a (our of inspection was made by numbers of peoplo, and tea in one of the largo wards was dispensed to (he general public. Four wards have already been named— the Islington Ward, the' Wilford Ward, (he Hugh Ward Ward, and thc-Macarlhy Ward—and there are already several donations from kindly people." A cot has been given by Mrs. Harold Wilson, of Newtown, with mat trass and pillows, a very luuulsomo picture screen by Jliss Xita Hammond, of Karori, and a large quantity of entirely now clothes worked by the guild for (lie Children's Hospital. A charming souvenir of the oecaMon, in (Jie form of a booklet with illustrations and a history of the movement, compiled by an ex-patient, an artist, were given to many of those present. A box of dolls for the children had been sent by Mrs. W. ricld, and Mrs. T. G. Jlaciuihy had forwarded 11 basket of most beautiful flowers, which wero taken to the small patients. His Excellency was entertained at toa in one of tho smaller rooms, there being present the chairman of the committee, some of the committee members, Dr. Hardwiek Hmith, Jlis-i Payne, <in<l Captain M'Dongall, A.D.C. Anions (hose on the verandah when the speeches were being made were Mrs. T. G. Macarthy; wearing a frock of pale violet eharmeuse, (rimmed with self-coloured braid ami embroidery, and a velvet toque ni' the same shade, trimmed with bands of embroidery and pale violet plumes; Jtiss liichniond, in a violet linen coat mid skirt and violet hat; Lady Findlay, in grey fatin, with tunic of lace andblack hat with while (lowers.
