Cook presided, and there were about thirty present. The annual report and balance-sheet (published in yesterday's Dominion) were adapted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. J. P. Firth; vice-presidents, .Mr. M. C. Jiarnctt ami Dr. Young; club captain, Mr. A. E. Wilson; committee of management, Messrs. W. C. Alexander, 11. 11. Dawson, L. W. Gilbt-rt.A. Grace; Wellington Union delegates, Messrs. S. S. Brown, A. E. Wilson, and 11. D. Thomson; secretary, Mr. E. Xorris; treasurer, Mr. A. P. Stiice; auditor, Mr. W. 11. Morrah; classification committee, Messrs. Stace, Drake, and Grace. The matter of endeavouring to obtain a gymnasium whs introduced. Members thought "gym." work should bo added to the outdoor training which has been decided on. It was stated that a mave was being made to secure a building and traiiiprs. It was decided to donate five guineas towards the Wellington College ground fund. MELROSE CLUB'S MEETING. The annual meeting of tho Melrose Football Club was held last evening, Mr. A. 11. Fullford presiding over an attendance of about fifty members. Moving the adoption of the annual report (nlready summarised in the Dominion), Mr. Fullford congratulated the senior team on the performance it had put up during the previous season, and predicted that it would make u name for itself during tho season about to commence. Mr. Ji. Sievers also praised the performance of the senior team, and said that he was quite satisfied Hint with a little more training this year it would attain a very high standard indeed, if it did not succeed in winning the championship. Mr. Burns remnrked thnt the club had enjoyed a very successful year, both financially and from the membership point of view. Relying as it did mainly upon young members, it must be content to wait for a year or two before it achieved the legitimate ambition of a club in winning tho championship, but it had excellent prospects. It should be able this year to enter learns in nil grades, and there need be no recurrence of the withdrawals of tho previous year. The past year had teen a splendid one so far as good conduct nnd good plav were concerned. The club hud gone right through the season without a 111 I ell of any kind, and there was no reason why this standard should not be maintained, lie hoped that the title that some pressmen had attached to the Melroso Club would be wiped out. The report and Imliuioe-slieel, the latter showing a substantial credit balance, were adopted. ! Eleven new members were admit! Ed to the club. Tho chairman stated that Mr. t. Johnson, and old member ot the club, had donated 10s. to the gymnasium fund. Mr. Fullford himself donated a guinea to the club funds. The following officers were elected for tho ensuing yew:—Patron, Mr. A. H. Fullford; president, Mr. J. Burns; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. Grant, G. Trevor, R. Burke, W. Houchcn, J. V. Luke, R. A. Wright, J. Smith, D. Gilchrist, Dr. llardwick Smith, G. Howe, L. Sievers, J. Cornier, C. Campbell; J. Beimelt, L. Johnson, T. Spencer, sen., E. Dockerly, J. Foley, and F. M'Parland; secretary, Mr. J. Patterson; assistant secretary, Mr. M. Gibson; treasurer, Mr. G. Spencer; Management Committee, Messrs. A. Gilchrist, A. Pallerson, W. Church, A. Goodwin, D. Sullivan, H. Murphy, and J. Marshall; delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs. J. Burns, C. Campbell, and J. Patterson; auditors, Messrs. J. , . Grant and R. C.-irswell; gymnasium trustess, Messrs. A. H. Fullford nnd J. Burns; club captain, Mr. C. Campbell. Strong, ffforts were made to get the retiring secretary (Mr. M. F. Gibson) to withdraw his resignation, but he stated that business considerations made it impossible for him to retain the position. A proposal was made that Tuesday and Thursday should be the club practico nights. "The matter was referred to the trustees. A proposal by the Athletic Club (to be dealt with at the annual meeting of the Rugby Union to-morrow evening) that (iroceeds from one match during the season should be divided between clubs having built or intending to build gymnasia, wa« briefly discussed. Mr. fl. Howe contended that the proposal, as it. stood, would unduly favour the club which spent most on a gymnasium. He objected to one club getting more tlwn another. Mr. Sievers said that the Athletic Club's proposal would not work out in practice. It would be much bettor to make an attempt to strengthen the insurance fund. Mr. Burns remnrked that it would be unwise to tie the delegates down. His own objection to (he proposal was that a club which had almost paid for its gymnasium would soon cease to derive any benefit, whereas a club that had a larger debt would participate in Gymnasium Saturday proceeds for years. It would be well to fix a maximum amount which no club could exceed. Eventually it was agreed to give the delegates a full hand. The delegates were instructed to move at the annual meet ing -.—"That the Management Ccminitlee grant free passes to club secretaries for all grounds and dressing-rooms under their jurisdiction." Mr. J. Burns remarked that the club matches would probably commence on the second Saturday after Easter. It was agreed that club practice should commence as soon as the gymnasium could be got ready. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring 'officers , . . ST. JAMES'S CLUB. The annual meeting of the St. James's Football Club was held last evening, Mr. F. Kitto presiding. Officers were elected as follow for the ensuing year:—Patron, Rev. W. Shirer; president, Mr. F. Kitto; vice-presidents, Dr. Cameron, Messrs. R. G. Dagger, A. Campbell, R. A. Wright, W. Rowe, J. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. , In speaking on football matters, Mr. N Hardhani stated that a notion was Ea'iniw,' currency that, if members were not of n certain religion, they did not get a fair healing." He wished to deny Mr. James Rynn concerred. He remarked that it was common talk that, if ii man were not of the persuasion indicated by the previous sneaker, ho was not jrlected to play. He challenged anybody to prove that. Mr Cole? stated he was sorry to hear such'a thing mentioned. He hoped that il would be buried. Mr. J. For the second yo.ir in succession Thomas .Mayer has won the Champion ot Champions Tourney in Wellington, which means that he once more ranks as the best singles player in Wellington lor the season. Tlio Cuumpion ot Champions tourney was only inaugurated last season, when Mayer came out on top, and yesterday saw the Victorian player again the winner. There is always an element of luck in bowls, but it piayecl no p:\rt in yesterday's games as far as the winner was concerned, for he was in topnotch form and outplayed and outguucrallcd all who came against him. Before the games started it was announced that iNlr. J. Porteous, the Wellington Club's representative, would 1)6 unable to play on account of the dentil ol his wife, and play was postponed for an hour out of respect for the player who had sustained so grievous a loss. A motion of condolence was also passed by the club representatives present. Sievwright, tho runner-up, took Porteous's place. The games, which were plnyed on the Wellington Club's green, resulted as follows:— First Hound. Cates (Petone) bent Ucndry (Uutt), 19Mayer (Victoria) brat Gray (Thorndon), 2li—3.' Crawford (Karori) beat Cates (Petone), 20-11. Final. Mayer (Victoria) brat Crawford (Karori), In the final game, Crawford, who had played steadily in the second round, put up a very gooil game indeed—a better one than the score indicates—but Mayer played brilliantly, getting mostly everything he went for, proving conclusively that there was no better singles player engaged in the tourney. The win was a popular one, and the winner was loaded with congratulations at the end of the final game. ■■■•'■ : "•'THE' ■NEAVTOWN 1 CLUB.
