SWIFTS CLUB'S MILE. Few events in local swimming circles rau.--e greater interest that the annual mile handicap race' which the Swifts Club decides towards the end of each season. 'The latest of the series was swum at Te Aro Baths on Saturday, under fine weather conditions, nlboit tho water was not as warm as could have been desired. Fit'teeji, garters',turne(l.out, tho handicaps /rained' by'Messrs!"r. Wilton and L. Sleightholmc being as follow.—E. Vango, 7miii. 30sec; W. H. Ellis, Gniin. tOsec; L. H. Butler, smin. nOsec.; G. The limit man made good use of his start, and had :overed 380 yards when the scratch men were dispatched. A good deal of jostling occurred in the early stages of the race, owing to the crowded field, but, after a thousand yards had been covered,, tho competitors dwindled down to a dozen through withdrawals. At the 1500 yards Morpoth had taken the lead, and looked all over a winner, but, in the next hundred yards M'Lean spurted, and passed him. .With sixty yards to go M'Lean was leading Morpeth by eight yards,'with the two scratch men (Murrell and Newman) still together five yards further back. The final brush for home saw M'Lean maintain his lead from the back-markers, while Morpeth fell back. Murrell turned well for tho final stretch, thereby disposing of Newman, and, finishing strongly, just got up in time to secure . second place from Morpeth on the touch. Newman was two- yards away, with Crowther some distance back fifth. The order of finishing, with the actual time of each competitor, was as follows:—A. M'Lean (SOinin. 27sec), 1; S. Murrell (28min. lOsec), 2; W\ Q. Morpeth (31min. 3Gsec). 3; E. M. Newman (28min. Msec). -1; A. Crowther (29min. f>7sec.), 5; E. Vango (3'min. 21sec), G; K. I). Russell (33niin. 38sec.). 7. Murrell, Newman, and Crowther gained club standard badges by covering the mile in less than 30 minute*. Morpeth has been singularly unfortunate in his efforts to win mile races. His record is five itarts, in which he has secured one second place and four thirds. Saturday's rnca was easily the best ovent yet held locally over the distance, and good handicapping had much to do with that satisfactorv result, BOYS' HANDICAP. ■ A 50yds, handicap race was held at the Thorndon Baths last week for boys attending the various schools in the district. Tho trophies were ftold and silver medals presented by Mr. K. Eonayne, of the Thorndon Amateur Swimming Club. Despite the roughness of the water some ot the aspirants showed promise. C.
