CIVIC AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the City Council wns held last evening, the Acfing-Mnvor (Councillor J. Smith) presiding. Also present were Councillors If. Fletcher, G. Shirtcliffc,'J. Trevor, A. 11. Hindmnrsh, J. Fuller, jinir., J. GouTicr, A. It. Atkinson, G. Trost, l'\ Cohen, .1. L. Fitzgerald, L. M'Kcnzie, A\. H. V. Barber, and Dr. Cameron. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor M'Laren. • Onslow Lighting. The draft agreement between the Onslow Borough Council and. the 'Wellington City Council, with respect to the JigntiV of the. borough streets was approved, with' alterations suggested by the electrical engineer; but the City Council would not agree to the insertion of a penalty clause. The agreement under which the streets of the borough hnve been lighted in the past expired on February 21 Inst. Tho term of the proposed agreement is five years, and the price per lamp per anil tun is to remain as at present (X' 3 10s.). Clause 8 of the expired agreement provided that during the Inst three years of the agreement the borough would not require any fresh mains without at the same time agreeing to lake a supply of energy for them for nt least three years more. It is proposed to amend this clause by providing that now lamps erected within concluding two years of contract be paid for at capital cost of contract, not renewed. City Leases. On the recommendation of its Legislation and Heclaimed Land Leases Committee, the council granted Messrs. John Fuller anil Sons an extension of eighteen months within which to commence buildin" on sections 120. 121, 123, 124, and 136, Lambton reclaimed land, the building to be completed by October 1, 1013. The site referred to is that of the Theatre Itoval, which Messrs. Fuller and Son intend'to demolish and replace with a new theatre. Proposed Tramway Extension. A letter was received from the Kilbimie llatepavers' Association urging the council to extend the tramline from Constable Street tcrmimid '<« tho old hotel m lviihirnic, via -Wellington Koad. In support of the proposal it was advanced that the distance was short, and that if the line were constructed as sugeested, passengers could bo carried from liintoiil Street to tho baths for one penny, or to the Kccreation Ttoserve for an equal fare. Iho Patent Slip 'and the Union Company s lnundrv would shortly employ, n large number of hands, to whom the line would be useful. The cost of constructing lie line over the proposed route would be much less than if it were taken down Crawford Hoad. The letter was referred to the Irani ways Committee.
