THE HIMITANGI.
ANOTHER TRIP FOR THE GERTIE. . It is practically certain now that the s.s. Gertie will set out on another voyage to the Chatham Islands on Saturday, and this time she will carry gear suitable to tackle tho Himitangi and tow her off if possible. . As stated yesterday, it will be unsafe for another steamer to approach tho stranded vessel nearer than a quarter of a mile, and the cable w.hich the Gertie will take on board will bo 1800 feet long. It transpires now that tho crew were awakened by the vessel striking tho solid beach, and being struck by tho incoining seas. No alarm of any kind was given before the vessel grounded, but. the actual time of grounding is fixed at 5 a.m. on February 11. _ A preliminary inquiry into the circumstances of the stranding was held at the Chatham Islands a few days after the mishap, and tho ovidenco taken at that inquiry is riow in tho custody of tho Marino Department at Wellington. Should tho enterprise • of refloating the Himitangi prove successful, a magisterial inquiry will bo held at the port of arrival in New Zealand. The probabilities are that the Gertie will bring back the officers and crew of the Himitangi, in which case tho inquiry may proceed at once.
