MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.H.) ALLEGED BKEACII 01' AWAIiD. The Wellington I'urnituro Union proceeded against Hoylnnd nnd Co., claiming XI as a penalty for a breach of award. The complaint was that the defendant had pent an employee named Llewelyn des J.iindes to Wanganiii to work for him, but had not paid reasonable expenses. .Mr. 0. Wonarly appeared lor Hie union, and .Mr. Jiiuir lor defendant. .Mr. iloriarly poim.cd out that, in the cabinetmaker.-■ award, there was no such thing as country work. All wages were basoii un the assumption that work was to bo done in the town in which .the worker resided. Other awards provided extra payment for country.work, and required tiie employers to supply suitable sleeping apartments. The whole question in tins' case was as to what constituted a reaseir.iblc allowance. Evidence wnS given to the chect ihat des Landes had been allowed Is. per day for hoard. Mr. Kiddell, S.M., considered that thcro was no need fur counsel for the defence to address the Court. His Worship held that the allowance of Is. a day for board was reasonable, and gave judgment for the (lefcudunl. .Mr. Ulnir asked for costs. Mr. Jiurinrty objected, as the amount was iiiider ..£-. The objection was upheld. Jlr. iroriarty.said he would give.formal notice of appeal, but his Worship said that o;i account of the sniallness of the claim an appeal was not allowable. Jlr. Moriarty said that he would bring another, and similar, case, in order to secure the right of appeal. "This man," he remarked, "is the sort of employer that brings the I'cdcration of Labour, and such organisations, into existence." A STOWAWAY". William Williams was convicted of travelling by the Moeraki from Sydney to Wellington as a stowaway. Williams .was ordered to pay the amount of the fare, JM Is., in default one month's imprisonment. ALLK;iKD' ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Arthur .C'bole, I."' years of age, a bricklayer, pleaded guilty to attempting suicide. f Sub-Inspector Sheeh in mentioned sonic of the circumstances. He said that a fewweeks ago, Chote, after a drinking bout, went down by the Hntt River at Trentham, and cut his throat with a razor. He had been in the hospital since then till his appearance in court. . He was convicted, and ordered, to come up for sentence when called on, nnd a piohibition order was issued against him. OTHER CASES. Annie M'Grath appeared on Temand charged with being an incorrigible rogue. Sho Was convicted and orderod to come up for sentence when called on, on condition she .went to the Salvation Army Home for twelve month?. i'or insobriety, Daniel M'C'arron was fined £1 George Miller, a fireman from the. steamer ltotorua, was lined 7s. for desertion, and was ordered to be placed aboard the vessel. Cochrane was ordered to pay XH 10s. Gd.' to J. Solomon by March 21. In the case of John Eraser Densem v. "John B. Stephenson, M IDs. Gd., debior was ordered to pay the amount by March 21.
