"PASSING IT ON."
EASTBOURNE AND PERRY FARES. For some little time past the Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr. H. AY. Shortt) has been in communication with the Harbour Ferries, Ltd., in connection with tho nerr fares, which have bten imposed since, the company was forced to raise the wages of their deck hands some weeks ago. The ordinary return fare has been raised from Is. to Is. 3d., but that increase was not brought into question. What tho council authorities are concerned about is the faros—weekly, monthly, or quarterly—charged the residents of Eastbourne, "and the Mayor hus pointed out that the effect of the increased rates will be prejudicial to the progress of (ho borough, as it was likely to retard settlement, nnd bring about a docrenso of residents, who aro compelled to come into town daily to their work. The following are the fares suggested by the Mayor and those at present ruling:— Suggested. Ruling. ■ S. s. d. £ s. d. Weeklv ...0 8 0 0 6 6 . At present they only run three nights a week at ordinary fares. Tho company's directors replied that they were unable to see their way clear to make any alterations in the revised scalo of fares, but thoy wonld take into consideration the proposition regarding tho night boats.
