ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION.

Mr. Leopold de Rothschild, of the famous banking family, was entering a motor-car at his offices in St. Swithin's Lane, when a man fired three shots at him. Mr. Rothschild was not hurt, but a policeman was wounded, and the glass in the motor was scattered about. (Kec. March 5, 10.15 p.m.) ' London, March 5. Mr., de Eothsohild had a remarkable escape, two shots' being fired point blank at his car. Detective Berg grappled with the assailant, who fired two more shots, shooting the detective in the throat. On being arrested the man gavo the name of AVilliam Tcbbilt. He is a Jew, and is unknown to Mr. da "Rothschild. For ten years he followed tho occupation of a leather-merchants' agent in Australia. He arrived from Melbourne in March last, his wife being still in Australia.
