BARLEY FOR FATTENING LAMBS

A MARTON EXPERIMENT. The feeding properties of the various kinds of barlev are about to be tested near tho Martin Junction Experiment Plots. A paddock of ten acres is being ploughed bv Mr. J. G. Wilson, and five different kinds of barley will be sown on plois of two acres each. Thoso to be tried are black and white Russian, Cape, Henehcn, and another. The plots will bo fenced off and fed down by lambs, each in turn. In each case the time tho lambs take to feed the crop off will be taken, and this will supply a rough indication of the feeding value of each varietv. To ascertain the actual value tho weight of the lambs would recjuire to be taken when they went on, and again when they come off, but it is considered that this would be too claborato a pro-, cess to be undertaken. Mr. Wilson has agreed to plough, fence, and feed off tho barley, and the Department of Agriculture will find the seed and supervise tho experiment, which will give some indication of the best variety of barley for this purpose at Mnrton and on similar lands and climate.
