CONDITION OF TOWN HOTELS

CASE OF "THE PALACE." The quarterly meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee\was held yesterday. Dr. M'Arthur presided, and Messrs. J. .Smith, G. Petheriek, and W. J. Helyer also were present. The following transfers were approved: —Clydo Quay Hotel, from Robert Thomas M'Farlane to Samuel William Moir (Mr. Ayson appeared in support of tho application); Caledonian Hotel, from Thomas Kingston to Walter James Jorgensen (Mr. J. J. M'Grath); and Albion Hotel, from David Cormack to P. W. Corby (Mr. C. B. Morison). In respect of the Hotel Cecil, the committee approved of a temporary transfer from the executors of the lato Francis M'Parland to Mrs. Margaret M'Parland. (Mr. M'Grath appeared in support of the application.) A drainage matter affecting the Central Hotel was discussed. Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for the licensee. The committeo decided that, if the requirements of the City Council's sanitary regulations were fulfilled, they would be satisfied. Matters concerning the conduct'and tho condition of the Palace Hotel were brought up. It was brought under notice that the licensee had been twice convicted for permitting drunkenness on the premises. Mr. A. Fair, who appeared for the licensee, stated that tho licensee had specially .warned his barmaids against selling liquor in any way which might load to trouble. However, the licensee would endeavour to dispose of tho license within tho next three months. Inspector Ellison stated that he had brought the matter under notice at _ this sitting of the committee so that tho licensee would not be taken by surprise at tho half-yearlv meeting, and would have time in which'to take.action in tho direction indicated as advisable. The place was in a bad condition, and needed renovating throughout. The police had given notice that the place must _ be renovated, and a now licensee put in, or tho renewal of the license would bo opposed at the half-yearly meeting. The committee's view was in lino with this proposal. _^
