THE ETHEL IRVING SEASON.
_« An enthusiastic wolcomo is certain to be tendered the distinguished English actress, Miss Ethel Irving, when she make? her first appearance in Wellington in W. Somerset Maugham's sparkling comedy, "Lady Frederick." Much has been heard of her brilliant.acting in this play, and that it must bo particularly attractive is evidenced by tho fact that she gave GOO performances in London alone. Not only .as a comedienne (locs Miss Irving excel, but she is said to bo equally .15 convincing when the deeper emotions are called into play. Miss Irving is supported by her complete London company from the St. James Theatre.. Of tho production in Sydney recently, tho "Evening News" said:—"Like old times, they recalled to older playgoers the series of comedy triumphs of tho past, when the late Robert Brough nnd Dion Bcuccicault gave of the best." For tho last six months or so Miss Irving has been creating quite a furore of enthusiasm in tho principal Australian cities. There was no intention whatever of visiting Xcw Zealand up to a few weeks ago. However, the Williamson management persuaded .Mi?s Irving la cable to London to see if her season there could not be postponed for a'couple of month?, in order to enable her to come here. "Lady Frederick" will be presented on (he first fivo nights, and "The Witness for the Defence on tho final Hi roe. The plans for tho seas™ will ba opened at the Dresden to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock. Arrangements have been mado to form a quoue at an early hour, and thus allow booking to proceed without discomfort.
