Henry Edward Dennett,, alias Harry Davis, alias Thomas Tobbing, an escapee from the Tailmpe Gaol, whore he was awaiting trial on a charge of assault and robbery alleged to have been committed at Opo'tiki, was arrested by Sergeant llutton and Detective Mitchell on tlie s.s. Victoria on Saturday. He was brought before Mr. Barton, S.M., and remanded to appear at Taihapo on Wednesday.

BAND CONTEST. Dunedin, March 2. For tho band contest to be held in his Majesty's Theatre, from October 14 to 19, the following prize money has been allotted:—A grade, «£2OO, .£75, .£SO, .£25; U grade, £75, ,£3O, .£ls, ,£10; quickstep, £25, ,£ls, .£lO, £a. It is understood that at least one Australian, band will compete.

HARVESTING. Timaru, March 2. Light rain in tho night followed by very heavy rain to-day must hamper harvesting and tend to injure tho produce. A good deal of the crop has been got into stack, but l'nuch is in stook yet. A smaller quantity has yet to be cut.

HOLME STATION. Timaru, March 2. The major portion of Mr. A. S. Elworthy's Iftlme Station estates of 3579 acres, divided into fourteen farms of 100 to 400 acres, was submitted to auction to-day. The saleroom was crowded, but no salo was effected, only one or two lots obtaining bids. The auctioneers stated that the farms must be sold, and will soon go privately.

LICENSING COMMITTEES. Christchurch, March 2. Ten nominations liavo been received for the Christchurch Licensing Committee. Five on the temperance ticket and five independents will he the contcstors. There will also be contests at ltainpoi and Hiccarton, tho issue in (he latter district being the granting "f conditional licenses for the races, show, and saleyards. A temperance committeo was returned unopposed for Avon, where there is only one hotel. Napier, March 3. The former Licensing Comm.ittco for Napier has been returned unopposed.

SCENE IN COURT. Auckland, March 2. . The jury in the case brought against Lilian Lang at the Supreme Court of having procured abortion returned a verdict of guilty, accompanied by a strong recommendation to mercy. 'When the jury returned its verdict tho prisoner created a scene. Several of the warders had to hasten to her assistance, anil tho woman shrieked hysterically as she was removed from the dock. Sentence was deferred.

YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH. Christchurch, March 3. Ester IJcToly, single, about 2G years of age, employed as housekeeper at Eacecourso Hill, was found dead in bed at seven o'clock on Friday night. She had been about the house as usual during tho evening, and appeared in her usual stato of health, except that sho complained of headache when called for tea. Sho was found with her throat cut. She had been in indifferent health for some weeks, and it is believed a sudden recurrence of her illness partly unhinged her reason.

CHARGE AGAINST A FRUIT HAWKER. Christchurch, March 2. As a sequel -to the disturbance caused by a. number of youths who assembled last Saturday night outside a Chinese fruit shop, James Byrne, a fruit hawker, was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-<lay with doing an act which caused persons to congregate so as to impede traffic in Cashcl Street on the night of Saturday, February 24. Tho rase was adjourned till Tuesday, defendant only having been served with information yesterday afternoon-

IN THE EVENT OF A STRIKE, Waihi, March 2. At ft meeting of the Waihi Workers' Union last evening, a resolution was passed endorsing the action of the Auckland general labourers in their dispute with tho employers, and promising, in the event of a strike, financial aid to the extent of 10 per cent, of the earnings, or more if necessary.

ALLEGED CATTLE SHOOTING. Hamilton, March 2. At the sittings of the Supreme Court at Hamilton, Frank O'Keefe, Nelson Fraei, Edmund Francis Fraei, Robert Maxwell Wiley, and Aloin Wiley were charged with cattle-shooting and stealing in the King Country. The jury, after a long deliberation, acquitted the two Wileys, but disagreed regarding tho others. A second trial was ordered, when Nelson Fraei was discharged. The jury disagreed in the remaining two cases. Mr. Brown, solicitor, intimated that he would not press for a further trial, and the prisoners were released.
