CALIFORNIAN THISTLE.

ATTACKED BY RUST. A number of specimens of Californian thistle attacked with rust havo been received by tho Fields and Experimental Division of tho Department of Agriculture. The Biologist, Air. A. H. Cockayne, reports the trouble to bo the thistle-rust (Puccinia hieracei). He says: "This disease appears to be spreading considerably in vanoui localities, and experiments havo been undertaken to ascertain its value as a thistle-controller. So far it appears to attack only isolated plants, and rarely appears to kill them entirely out. Howover, it has certainly increased considerably during tho past two seasons, and there aro indications that it may prove of distinct value."
