A deputation of horse-owners from all parts of the country was received at the War Office on January 17 by LieuteuanfGeneral Miles, Mnjor-Gcneral Cowans, and Colonel Fowlo., Mr. E. S. Tilling said tho deputation wished to emphasiso the point that unless seasoned horses wero kept in time of peace they would not bo ready in time of war. General Miles said (ho Army Council was opposed to tho policy of a subsidy. They realisod that it was impossible to stop '.ho increase of mechanical traction. Tho suggestions made by the deputation would, however, iccoivo tho careful consideration of tho Army Council. Estato of the gross value of £1,220,639, of which tho not personalty amounts to £1,033,974, was left by Sir William Cuthbcrt Quilter, Burt., of Bawdsoy Manor, Woodbridgo, Suffolk, who died on November 18 last, aged seventy years. Ho left tho wholo of his estate to members of his family, except £800 for division among four local hospitals and bequests to servants. The death duties on Sir Cuthbert Quitter's estato will bo over £195,000,
