That the abolition of the bookmaker has not resulted in clearing racecourse! of -'crooks" is evidenced by tho presence of some clover pickpockets at tho Wanganui Cup meeting. Ono racegoor was relieved of w£7s in tho crush round the totalisator yesterday, whilo another had X's9 taken from him. Other losses of varving amounts arc also reported, and ■altogether it is estimated that between ,£3OO and .£IOO passed during the day. into tho hands of tho light-fingered. One of tho class now favouring tho Wanganui races with his patronage is popularly credited—with tho usual New Zealand hyperbole—with, being tho smartest pick-pockcter south of tho Line. He was soon yesterday frequently mixing with crowds in a most innocent-looking manner but, so cleverly did ho concoal his operations, that ho could not bo caught, , despito the strict watch kept upon him.
