BENZINE AND A LIGHTED CANDLE. A serioiiß lire occurred at 9 p.m. yesterday nt No. 135 Vivian Street, in au eight-roomed dwelling, occupied by Mr. Samuel Lawlor. Tlio outbreak, which occurred on the first floor, was caused by a boarder demising his clothes with benzine iu closo proximity to a lighted candle. The vapour ignited Buddcnly, and before anything could bo done tho room wus in Humes. Tho first floor was badly damaged with fire, and the ground floor suffered considerably from water. Thero was no insurance on the contents. Messrs. llarcourt and Co. aro agents for tho building.
At 7.43 last evening the Fire Brigad* received a call to tho Stato Coal Department's depot iu Lower Cuba Street, wher« it was discovered that a heap of bags in tho back promises 'bad burst into flamo. Auckland, ■ March 1. A fire at Opotiki this morning destroyed a dwelling owned by Mrs. Shalfoon, and occupied by Mr- Stark. Nothing woa Baved. The building was insured for .£2OO in the Australian Allianco, and the contents for .£IOO in tho Liverpool, London, and Globo.
