PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

A little after ten o'clock last night the firebell at Terrace End sounded a.n alarm, 'tho promises occupied by- Mr. Max Just, fruiterer, being on fire. The fire brigade soon hail tho flames under, but a good deal of damage was dono to the house, which comprised seven rooms and a shop. Tho premises are insured in tho Guardian Office for MOO. Tho occupants were absent at the time. Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., held its usual meeting last night, when thero was a good attendance Bro. W. C. Dudley, N.G., occupied tho chair. It was decided to hold a. "social" and danco at an early date in aid of a member who has been ill for a considerable time. At tho conclusion of tho business a rope quoit match was played, the trophy being won by Bro. S. J. Watson. Sharon in.tho new Motor Transport Company aro being taken up in considerable numbers.
Another exhibition of swimming, dicing, etc., was given yesterday by tho members of tho Waitemata (Auckland) Swimming Club. Miss M'Kay, a member of tho team, also gave an exhibition, which was greatly admired. Among tho spectators wero a number of High School girls and residents of tho town.
