MANSLAUGHTER. Auckland, February 28. A chauffeur named lih:>des Battye was found guilty to-day of the manslaughter of one John M'C'oiinell, with a strong recommendation to mercy. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment without hard labour.

FURNITURE TRADE CONGRESS. Dunedin, I'clininry 28. The biennial congress of the New Zealand I'lunitiirc Trade Industrial Association of Workers opened here, to-day. Moriarty (Weliligton). Mr. l'nttison was elected president of the congress. The report presented showed that the unions were paying capitation as follow:—Auckland, 75 members; Wellington, 250; Christchurch, 155; Dunedin, fIG. The remainder of the day was devoted to consideration of proposed alterations in rules.
