EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Hoard was hold yesterday, there being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Lei>), and Messrs. W. 11.. Field, A. W. Hogg, ,). Kebbell, A. 11. Vile, Win. Allan, J. G. W. Aitken, and W. Freeman. The monthly statement of finances disclosed a debit balance of J:2.')M !15.,8d. The debit balance shown ul the previous meeting was ,i 1724 l'is. Bd. Referring lo the increase of _SOO in the ■amount of the debit balance since tlifi last meeting of the board, the chairman said that a large number of cheques had been drawn during the current _ month against—in many cases non-recurring liabilities—while there was due, as a set-ofl, a largo amount from the Education Department, so that the fiunncial position of the board was absolutely good. Hie amounts due to the board would more than cover the deficit shown in the. statement. Tho statement was adopted. GRANTS AND WORKS. Grants for works and.repairs were authorised for the following schools and teachers' residences: — Newman, painting roof of school; Jo Aro, new dust bin and gate; Otaki, renewals and repairs to fence; ballance, fencn repairs J.'lß, on condition that committee undertakes minor repairs; Kakariki, repairs chimney, roof, and spouting, ' and periodic overhaul; Alfrc Iton, fencing renewal,- Te Aro, repair of damage by fire; I'arkvale, repairs and alterations; Masterton, side school, ivater service renewal; Kilbirnie, half cost fencing material; Newtown, sanitary tank renewal. The following tenders were accepted:— Alfredton (erection of teacher's residence), A. R.' Power; Pafkvale (alteration!- to residence and repairs to school), T. S. Amis; Waione (additions to residence), W. Whittaker; Puketoi (additions to residence), W. Whittaker; Korora (repair* to residence and school), \\. v\ hittaker; Island Bay (renewal of spouting), jf'Grcgor and Jameson. Library subsidies were granted to the schools at liongokokako (JEI), Hutemm (.C5), Manakau (XI), Muritai {£1 os. 6d.), Wnibakeke (£1 lis. 9d.). A committee of the board was appointed to visit, the Koseneath School on a suitable day to report on tho question of It was also resolved, with regard to the following:— I'oroutawhao—That conveyance under the previous conditions be continued until the end of March. ' Sections 1 and 2, Waiopehu—That transfer from Mr. Bishop to a nominee approved by the board, be sanctioned. Pongaroa—That report on residence be referred to the Board. The following grants, in aid, were received from the Government:—For Kahautara School, JC295; Hongnkako School, .£310; teachers' residence at Waterfalls, ■£■•04. TEACHERS' CLASSES. On the recommendation of the inspectors, it was decided to arrange classes for teachers, pupil teachers, and probationers as follow:— At the Training College, Wellington.— Drawing and handwork—Thursdays, 1.30 to 3.30 p.m.; Saturdays, 9.30 to 11,30 a.m. Cardboard modelling and woodworkSaturdays, 9.30 to 11.30 a.m. (Mr. Howe). Domestic economy and cookery—Saturdays,- 9.30 to 11.30 a.m. (Miss Macintosh and Miss Alexander). Physical measure-ments-Saturdays, 9.30 to 11.30 a.m. (Mr. Stuckey).' Singing—Saturdays, 11.45 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. (Mr. Robert Parker). Wairarapa classes, at Masterton.—(l) Drawing and handwork, physiology, and, during the latter part of the :.enr, singing and drill, cardboard modelling, and perhaps woodwork, provided twelve teachers notify tho board that they are willing to attend classes in these, subjects; cookery, provided twelve teachers notify willingness to attend. Arrangements will also bo ninde with the ■ locnl Technical School managers to hold "Classes at that institution if found necessary. The ex-, ponses of tho above classes will be paid out of the grants for itJio instruction of teachers and for capitation. ' Elementary agriculture—Saturday classes in elementary agriculture will bo established at Paliiatun during the spring and summer months, and Mr. Camming will be permitted to hold wintdr classes for tho Iwnefit of farmers and others. Steps will also lie takon to hold an agricultural school nt Greytown and elsewhcro during the year. Intimation was received from the Education Department that the grant authorised last year for the instruction of uncertificated teachers would be renewed this year.
VARIOUS MATTERS. The following additional students, supplementary to the list of those selected for admission in January, were admitted to tho Wellington Teachers' Training College:—Miss F. Campbell, Marlborough; Mis'! C. F.Power, Nelson; Mr. J. C. Whiblev. Hawko's Bay; Miss C. M. Maynnrd,' Wellington; Mr. V. Parsons, Hawko's Bay; Mr. H. F. Brock, Nelson. An application from Mr. C. T. Price for the establishment of a school at Karapoti, between Mungaroa and. i.'pper Akataraiva, was referred to the board's inspectors for report. • ' In replv to nn invitation of the Reikiorangi School Committee, it was agreed that tho chairman (Mr. Lee), with other memlrers who might desire to bo present, should represent the board at the official opening of the new school building. Tho following additional scholarship awards were made:—Junior Education Board Scholarship, Class A—Lily Keeble; Senior Rural Scholarship-Alice C. M'Ardle. The board's retiring representatives on the Wellington Technical School BoardMessrs. W. Allan, W. 11. Field, and J. G. W. Aitken—were reappointed for n further term, as- also were Messrs. D. M'Kenzio and G. London, the board's retiring representatives on the Petono Technical School Board."
