The newspapers revive the statement that in view of the opening of the Panama Canal Great Britain is fortifying Fanning' Island, the cable station in tho Pacific, and is considering the establishment of a naval base on "Washington-Island. It is stated that tho British Government is also inquiring with regard .to dock construction in Jamaica.
Fanning Island (3deg. Slmin. N. lat., 159deg. 22min. W. long.) is a small atoll nino, miles by four covered with coconut trees! copra and guano being exported. It is a station for the Pacific Cable. Washington or New York Island Meg. 40min. N. lat., lGOdeg. 20min. W. long.) has on area of six square miles.
