TIMBER FREISHTS.
AND FINES FOR OVERLOADING. A telegram from our Greymouth correspondent, published yesterday morning, stated that sawmillcrs on tho West Coast were exercised about n new railway regulation gazetted last week. Inquiries made at the Departmental head office yesterday would seem to show that there is no special reason for alarm. Mr. R. M'Villy, chief clerk, slated that the gazetted by-law was men Iv an extract iron, the Act of 1910, and that, it entailed •no departure from existing practice. Ho denied also that the Departmental officers were unfair, or unduly exacting in cases where they thought it advisable lo retally a timber (ruck. They simply measured the timber in a reasonable way, m order to ascertain what freiglit was payable on it. All that tho Department desired was to be paid freight for all goods carried, but it was sometimes necessary in tho case of timber to see that all tho freight due was actually being charged.
