The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has forwarded a letter to llr. Hugh Ward, of Sydney, intimating that the board had, subject to Mr. Ward's permission, named one of the wards in the hospital after him, as a mark of the hoard's deep sense of obligation to ono who played so prominent a part in Iho campaign, which resulted in funds being raised to build the hospital. Mr. Ward has also been invited to attend the opening ceremony.
A paragraph which appeared in The Dominion last week stated that Princess Lucie Cantaeuzene, of Kumania, at present in Sydney, was contemplating a visit to New Zealand, and Messrs. Cook and Son wero instructed to -tscertaiii if there would be any difficulty in getting her servants into tho country. One is her maid, a Rumanian woman, and the olhcr an Egyptian courier. Tho Customs authorities here informed Cook's that it would ba necessary to enter into bonds that these people would not remain in the country. This information was communicated to tho Princess, with tho lesult that tho local manager (Mr. If. C. Cramond) has been advised that her Highness does not intend to visit New Zealand. In Australia tho "suite" was granted » three months' exemption from the provisions of tho Alien Immigration Act after the authorities satisfied themselves as to the bona fides of tho party.
A spontaneous expression of thanks from eight uncertificated teachers who had been accorded an opportunity of attending tho Teachers' Training Collego at ton, for the purpose of improving their status, was received by tho Wellington Education Board yesterday. Careful inquiry is being made by the Defence Department into the allegations of vandalism -which wero the subject of a report to the Wellington Education Board by tho headmaster of tin. Normal School at Thorndon last month in connection with the nse of the school premises by tho Senior Cadets. The spring at tho foot of the steps leading to the Wadestown Road in Thorndon is being put to great servico now that the city's -water supply has a taint. Yesterday evening crowds, armed with jugs and every vessel- that could hold u supply of water with tho greatest convenience thronged the spring, and at times it was no uncommon sight to see two .or three hundred people waiting for their turn at tho well. The qualities of this natural flow of water have apparently been bruited afar, for people had ome'by motor-car, bicycle, and trap.
Some gentlemen interested in tho cement industry tako objection to tho weight of bags recommended by Mr. E. B. Attwood', the arbitrator who acted in the case between tho waterside workers and the union Staam Ship Company on Monday. Ono authority states: ".Mr.'Attwood considers th.it tho weight of bags should be 1121b. That is hardly possible, inasmuch as there aro recognised standards in respect to cement packages. The cask is tho staniard for tho world, and tho bag we uso contains ISGIb. —or three to the cask. 'Wo cannot very well default from the British standard—one which has quite recently been adopted bv the United States of America. And what, after all, is the difference? Only Ulb."
Every endeavour is being made by the City Engineer to improve tho Wainui water, which during the past few days has been tainted by rotting vegetation it is supposed, in tho new Morton Dam at Solomon's Knob. On Monday and yesterday largo quantities of slaked lime have been emptied into tho stream immediately above (ho intake of (ho new dam, in order that it may be carried through the waters of tho "reservoir by the current. This method of purification can hardly be expected to have immediate effect on a big lake (which contains 120,f)fin,(IOn gallons of water), but with persistent treatment in the manner described it is hoped that the faint will be gradually removed.
