THE WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY SERGEANT JAMES. Sir Teltirasli.—SDtcial Correspondent.) Greytown, February 25. For the resumption of tho Wairarapa Hide Association's meeting the. morning broke dull and cold. Quite a feature of this meeting is the number of competitors who attend in their own motor-ears. It is qtiito tho motor-car rifle meeting of the North Island. The 700 yds. of the Mastetlon Match was taken first. The morning being cold, the competitors' were at first, troubled with problems of elevation. M'lntosh, who had a clear run of 4 points in the aggregate, missed his sighter and his first counter, finishing with a total of 25 only. This brought him back to the field. Ma.-edeld (Sounds) shot magnificently here, puttiug on the possible, a very rare performance at seven hundred yards. James put on 33, after opening with a 3, and finishing with six bulls. This put James clear in. the lead by three, points from Loath am, of Akarana, who made 32. Oil going back to the 800 yd?;, for the Petone Match (ten shots), the wind rose, and considerably troubled tho competitors generally. Sergeant Alborough, of Nelson, aiid Rifleman A. I/arsen, of Mauriceville, each pnt up the possible here. C. J. Franklin (Weber) and James (Napier) each put on 49. James men had a clear lead in the championship of 6 points, tho leaders being: James, 241; Lcatham, 235; Clark (Rnngitikci), 232. Going back to 900 yds., for tho Final Match (ton shots), shooting opened with a very strong let't-wind. M'lntosh, ct Opaki, shot brilliantly, winning the match with tlio fine score of 19, James. .Clark, and Marlcy each made -47. This leit James the winner of tho championship with the fine total of 288. M Intosli (Opaki), and Clark, of Rangitikei, tied for second place, with 279, The latter is only a lad, and will certainly be heard of in the future. James gets a .record win, securing with the championship, the Bidwill Challenge Shield, the \Yalden Challenge Cup, the Buchanan Clip (which also carries with it a gold medal) and the Rivers Challenge Cup. He also wins .£24 10s. in cash. On his form he is about the finest shot in New Zealand to-dav.' and should^ make his mark at Trentliam. The Teams Match was won by the Opaki No. 1 team. Scores: Opaki No. 1, 1329; Opaki No. 2, 1295; Te Wharau, 1287. These carry with them prizes 'of five pounds, three pounds, and two pounds respectively. Seven other teams also competed. At a meeting, of the Woirarapa Rifle Association at Groytown to-night, which was attended by riflemen from all parts of the Dominion, the following resolution was unanimously carried: "lhat 111 the opinion oi this association, and in the interests of preserving and encouraging rifle shooting as one of our national sports, the constitution of the Dominion Hifle Association 'should be changed mid reformed on the lines of the successful National Association of New South Wales and Victoria, where competitors elect the council, and that u copy of this -esolution bo forwarded to the Dominion I'iilc Association and other associations."
