AXXUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the 'Wellington District Law Society was held last evening. Tho annual report states that the society lias lost eight members during the year through death and other causes; nevertheless, the present membership (211) is only ono less thau last year. Ot these, jit practice in town and 100 in the country. Thirty-three solicitors practising in the district hare not become members of the society. There are 219 solicitors practising in the Wellington district (an increase of 7 for the year). Twelve of thoss practising last year have discontinued to practise, died, or left the district, but, as shown, their placcs have been more than filled by new admissions and arrivals from elsewhere; 127 solicitors practise in the city of. Wellington, and 122 in country places. The number of practitioners in the Dominion «t the end of December, 191}, was 918, an increase of 37 over last year's returns. The number of solicitors in the respective districts and the inereisc or decrease Shown (luring the year are as follow (tho figures in parentheses are the numbers for 1910):—Auckland 220 ( 205), Canterbury 128 (120), Gisborne 20 (20), Hawke's Bay 52 (51), Marlborough 11 (9), Kelson 18 (17),. Otjgo 108 livid). Southland 33 (31), Taranaki ,53 (57), . Wellington 219 (242), Wcstlimd '22 ''20). ■ X'orth Island GOO (578); Kcutli Island 318 (303). Thirty-one applicants, 29 of whom resided in this district, have been," admitted' here as barristers and solicitors since the last report, viz;-.—Seven as barristers and solicitors, aiul fourteen as solicitors, not previously admitted; two as barristers »y examination; nine as barristers under "Sectbn 5 of 'tho Law Practitioners Act, 1908; and two as barristers and solicitors under English qualifications. For tho entire Dominion 85 notices of intention to apply for admission were received during tho year, viz.;— Auckland 2-1, Canterbury 3. Gisborne 1, Hawke's Bay. 5, Nelson 1, Otago G, Southland 2, Taranuki 1, Wellington 37, and West land 5. (The notices for 1910 numbered 03.) Of the above 10 were for admission as barristers and solicitors (2 on English .qualifications), 37 as _ solicitors, and 32 a,s barristers previously admitted in the Dominion as solicitors (six by examination, H under the fiva years' practice clause, and 12, the grounds of which are not stated in the abstracts of notices .supplied to the secretary of this society). Three of tho above applied for admission as solicitors on the ground of their English qualifications; two as barristers ami solicitors on the ground that they were English barristers-, and ono as barlister and solicitor on the ground that he was an .Irish barrister.
