Politicallv Timor is divided between Holland mid Portugal, the Dutch claimins the western section of 4500 square miles and 200,000 inhabitant?, the Portuguese liie eastern section of nearly 0500 square miles and 300,000 inhabitants/The respective capitals, centres of government, and ontports are Kupang (western) and Billy (eastern). But there arc a large number of practically independent petty States, as many as 47 in Portuguese territory alone.
