(From Car Special Oorressondent.) 9 Tho "black hand" has made its appearance at Lower Unit, but not nearly in such a downright stylo as is done on tho Continent. Oil the public hoardings may be ' seen inscriptions, roughly written, with a huge, black hand. In tho corner of each placard appears tho words: "Down with the press-gang and pimps. Down with military training." "Boys of Maoriland, now is the time to strike," and "Down with wowsers and scabs." On one placard may be seen the flag of tho United States, with a verse underneath, advising young New Zealanders to keen their country "as free as the States." Yesterday morning, shortly after_ 5 o'clock, a tiro broke out in a washhouse in the yard of the Central Hotel, Petone. The brigade succeeded in preventing the names from spreading to the main building, but the washhouse and its contents I about .C2O worth of house linen) were destroved. By way of concluding tho Harvest Festival held last week-end. a very successful sacred concert was held iu the Wesley Churnh. Petone, last evening. The Rev. Mr. Cot'.om provided over a jrond attendance. Those who contributed to a pood .programme were:—Misses MT.wen._ Foster. Me.'dame« Ackrovil, Maud, Aisher, and Messrs. Maud. Ifenplestnn, and Aekrovd. Tho choir also rerio.ercd an nntlieni. After the concert the harvest gifts were sold.
