FURTHER RESUMPTION OF WORK.

There was a rush to fill the vacancies, and those securing places have undertaken to pay ten per cent, of their wages in support of those unable to get back. Host of the sawmills and timber works arc again in full, swing. The iron trade and building trade employers are negotiating with a view to the resumption of work. Negotiations are also proceeding between tho Waterside Workers' Union and tlio - employers. Communications passed to-day, and a meeting of the men is being held to-night to discuss tho position. The statement is made that work is likely to bo resumed on the wharves about tho middle of the week. The Bundamba miners have decided to resume work if the employers are agreeable.

MR. COYNE STILL OPTIMISTIC. Brisbane, February 2G. Mr. Coyne denies a rumour that the Strike Committee has decided to order all strikers excepting tho tramway employees to resume work on Tuesday. Ho declares that tlio miners and wharf labourers will remain out so long as they are required to. Notwithstanding this declaration, ttero is indication that the etriko is ending. Work is proceeding at .tho whaives steadily by freo labour. A steamer left on Saturday for the Gulf Country, where supplies aro running short, no steamer having visited there for fivo weeks.

NEW SOUTH WALES SUPPORT, Sydney, February 26. A representative of tho Queensland strikers reports that as a result of his mission to the South Coast district, tho miners liavo promised to do everything possiblo to prevent coal being shipped to Brisbane. The District Miners' Associa ; tion has voted ,£2OO to tho strike fund. , Tho wharf labourers are still holding up the Brisbane steamers. Those sailing on Saturday took no cargo. Tho men also decline to discharge vessels arriving fTorn the northern port.

FIRE BRIGADE STRIKE. ADELAIDE WITHOUT PROTECTION. Adelaide, February 26. The fire brigade men of aU tho permanent staffs throughout the State have struck. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade Board has made arrangements to man three appliances. Volunteers for tho metropolitan station and suburban stations have been proportionately provided. Tho volunteers are being subjected to hostile demonstrations. Tho strikers aro picketing the stations, which the police aro guarding. Four alarms wero received and tho volunteers responded well. All tho alarms proved to be false. The Metropolitan Board has ordered the managers of all places of public entertainment .to appoint men from the staffs to" attend to'th'd'fire'appliance's! Business firms regard the situation as serious, as in tho event of a big outbreak of fire it would be impossible foi j depleted staffs to cope with it.

BOTH SIDES FIRM, (Rec. February 27, 0.55 a.m.) Adelaide, February 26. The lire brigades' strike is still unsettled, aiul both sides aro firm. The Fire Brigades Board reports that plenty of volunteers are offering. The applicants on approaching the stations are being accosted by the ex-firemen's pickets, and many have'been induced to change their minds. A movement is afoot to induce tho Mayors to mediate. The Government will have nothing to do with the matter beyond giving moral support to the board, which is confident of its ability to carry on, and afford the necessary protection to property. The City Council has discussed the situation, and has negatived a resolution condemning the board for locking out the firemen. HOTELS CLOSE DOWN. EMPLOYEES ON STRIKE. Sydney, February 2G. The hotel employees at Broken Hill, exceptiug thoso of four hotels and three workmen's clubs which aro paying the union log, have' struck. The hotels av« closed excepting ono bar in each, which tho proprietors can manage. (Eec. February 27, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, February 26. Several hundred employees at the Broken Hill hotels and restaurants have struck in support of the new log, with shorter hours and improved wages.
