Negotiations were commenced some time ago with a view to avoiding a contest. Last week Mr. H. M'Manaway, president of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, waited on Mr. H. M'lntyrc, secretary of the No-License League, and intimated that his party wished to consult tho League for tho purpose of endavouring to avoid a contest. Mr. M'lntyro replied that tho No-Ll-cejise League was also willing to avoid a contest, and was agreeable that the Licensed Victuallers' Association should have three representatives 011 the new bench, leaving two seats for tho NoLieenso League. Tho League did uot desire to put on two l.nen of rabid views, and their two nominees would be Mr. J. .T. CI. Cobbe and the Rev. G. Budd. Mr. M'Manaway, after laying the matter before his association, informed Mr. M'lntyre that; he could not agrco to allowing the No-Uconse League two representatives, but would accept one. Mr. •M'lntyre answered that his league would be unable to accept such a proposal, as they thought that they were entitled to at least two out of the live clectcd representatives. It: therefore looks at present as if a fight will result.
