THKIT AM) ASSACLT. On a ehargo of stealing n pair of dungaree trousers, valued at .'ls. (id., lite properly of Wolfe Schwarlj',, Thomas Campbell pleaded puilly and was convicted nnd fined 10s. in default of (8 hours' imprisonment.' lie was further charged with assaulting Selnviirtz, and. on that, charge, was sentenced to IS days' imprisonment.
UK BTAHTS A "SOCIAL." A charge of obtaining money and 'joods nndpi' fnisr' pretences was preferred tigainsl Christopher Chapman. II appeared from (he evidence (Iml, oil February 20, Chapman went lo the grocery business of Joseph Ormrod, and slnled (hat he had been sent by n member of Parliament to obtain some goods and £5 in cash >'or n "social." Accused subsequently reduced his estimate of thc expenses of (ho "social," and asked for JE2 and 3s. 4d. in goods, which wcro given. Mr. I'. W. Jackson, who appeared for tho dsfendant, said that Chapman was a worried man and wanted (lie money to pay rent, and to buy food. Accused, who pleaded guilly, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, on condition (hat ho paid (ho amounts before 10 a.m. to-day.
CLOTHING TAKEN. John Power was charged with stealing (wo pairs of trousers, valued at- 255., on February 2-1, these goods being the property ot Messrs. Duncan anil M'lntosh. Ho was further charged with stealing men's underwear valued at £5 Ssl, tho property of tho Ilat liox Mercery Co. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and was eonvic(ed and sentenced to one month's imprisonment cn each charge, tho (erins to be concurrent. The stolen property, which had been recovered, was ordered to be returned to the owners.
OTHER CASES. Jean Dalzicl, a middle-aged woman, pleaded guilty to a charge of being a rogue and vagabond, and was committed to the Salvation Army Home for a period of six months. For drunkenness, one first offender was fined 10s., in default -18 hours' imprisonment. Two first offenders were convicted nnd discharged. For insobriety, Michael Gregory; was fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment. A charge of insobriety was preferred against Joseph Kenny, who was ordered to. pay 17s. Gd. medical expenses, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. The defendant was given threo days in .which to find the amount. An order for the payment of Cs. a week to his father was issued against a young man named Edgar Ellis. George Stephens was adjudged the putative father of a certain child, and ordered to pay Gs. a week towards its support.
