EVIDENCE AS TO WORKING CONDITIONS. By Telegraph-Press Aseociatlon-Oopjrisht Sydney, Pebruary 24. Before the Sugar Commission, the secretary of the Sugar Workers' Union gave, evidence that working conditions were deplorable. Some employees at tho sugar works worked in a semi-nude and others in nn absolutely nude state. ])ad effects were caused by the terrific heat, and sudden changes to lower temperatures developed a (lisi.'aso known as toe-rot', also rheumatism, influenza, and bad teeth. Those who started as boys never reaehe.d maturity. If men worked for any length of time they "were unfitted for other work, and did not live to an old age.
