Mr. M, J. Bloomfiold, manager for Mr. Joseph Blascheek, raconteur, and monologuist, has arrived to make arrangements for the Wellington season. '

On Wednesday morning Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, left Whaugarei, on route for tho north. The Bishop's tour will include the gumfields. The trip round the gumfields will have to bo. accomplished on horseback, and to cover the district properly will tako several days. Tho Bishop will have all his meals and spend the nights in diggers' huts. .

The Rev. A. J. Devane, of Melbourne, left Wellington yesterday on a tour through the Hot Lakes district. Past and present officers of the Fifth Regiment (Wellington Hides), farewelled Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Duthio, late commanding officer of the regiment, at a dinner at the Burlington Cafe last evening. The function was a private one. General regret will be caused by tho news of the /death of Dr. A. L, Napier Maclean, who died at his residence in the Terrace yesterday. , He was well known in athletic circles, and frequentlv acted as judge in amateur boxing contests". Mr, Ernest E. Muir (formerly of the Duncdin "Star"), a senior member of the reporting Btaff of tho Auckland "Herald," severed nis connection with that paper yesterday. In the ovening Mr. Muir left for Pahiatua, where ho takes up the editorship of the Pahiatua "Herald,." At tho meeting of the City Council on Thursday, the Mayor (Mr. C. J, Parr) called attention to tho fact that it was the last occasion upon which Mr. Muir would bo reporting their proceedings, He paid a high tribute to the industry, ability, and honourable character of Mr. Muir, stating that he had won the high esteem of the public men of, Auckland, who wished him well In his new career, Ho was sure to make his mark at Pahiatua. A cordial Boene followed, the Mayor and councillors advancing to tho press table and shaking hands with Mr, Muir. Mr. Mulr's oonfreres on the "New Zealand Herald" and "Weekly News" staffs presented him with a nandsom* token of their sincere feelings towards him.
