There was a good deal said about the tainted state of the city water supply at tho City Council's outing at IVainui-o-ninta yesterday. Mr. W; H. Morton (City Engineer) attributes the cause to fomentation from decnying vegetation in the basin of the new reservoir at Solomon's Knob. Something similar har>. pened some time after tho new dam nt Karon was filled. They did their best by burning and grubbing to clear tho fcvcnleen acres now covered with water, but there' was always some vegetation which decayed under water, and that was doubtless the cause of the tainted water which had been coming through tho mains. It is proposed to ameliorate the nuisance by treating tho outflow with lime, which was effectively done at Karori. It is not expected that the nuisance would lone continue.
