CASTLEPOINT LIGHTHOUSE
A SIXTY FEET TOWEE. An improvement in the lighting of the East Coast of the North Tslnnd will soon be brought about by Ihe erection and installing of tho lighthouse tower that Messrs:- fc. Luke and C0.,.0f this city, have 'contracted to'mnnufnctnro and supply to the -New -Zealand. Government, to' he .located at Ca'stlepoinf. The lower is to be of cast iron, similar in design to the win that Messrs. Luko and Co. made in 18f)(! for Cape I'alliser. The Castlepoint tower will stand 6tlft. high, and will have a diameter at the base of 19ft., tapering lo 10ft. at the top. H is matlo up of ton rings, each Gff. high, each ring having twelve sections. Every plate, will be machined at nil joints to ensure being perfectly watertight. The tower will have four floors, with suitable metal windowfi times fitted. Each iloor will be approached by spiral steel staircases. Another feature is that at the lop on the external side a wide metal balcony will encircle the tower, having strong railings fitted. This will enable the keepers to clean the glass from the outside. The lantern itself, which will stand about lOi'l. high, is to be fitted with a light of the first order. The plans and specification:! hnvo been prepared by- the Public Works Department, which will carry out tho erection of the tower at the* site, and .when completed it will be handed over to the Marine. Department, whose duty is to maintain'tho lighthouses on the coast of the Dominion.
