DRAS TIC BY-LAW.
COMPLAINT BY THE BUTCHERS. The proposed new city by-law relating to the control cf butchers' shops was called in question by n deputation 'of the Master Butchers' Union, which waited upon the City Council last night. Mr. X R. Reid said that the union considered the by-law somewhat drastic. If it were enforced tho increased cost, of running his business would drive tho small' butcher out of tho trade, and it would fall into tho hands, of a fewlarge concerns. He cited the various clauses in the by-law to which .the deputation took exception. All'of these affected the internal fittings of the shop, ventilation, the glazing of- all the. shopfront, the precautions for keeping of dogs and rats out of the shop, and the wearing of white overalls. Mr. ./. Robb pointed out that many of the butchers were only weekly tenants, and the by-law would render necessary certain very extensive alterations. The. landlord might: not.,in all cases be ..will-, in? to'inakpr.theni, and the-small-butcher-might find it impossible to secure other premises. • It was arranged that a committee of the master butchers wait upon the Abattoirs Committee of the council next week, and state their objections to the by-law in detail.
