MR. SIDEY'S HOUR.

"UNION OF LIBERAL AND LABOUR." THE GOVERNOR'S'SPEECH. . Mr. : T. K. SIDEY ■ (Duncdin ' South), who resumed the ivant-of-confitlence debate at i p.m., said the significance of Ihe general election required to bo examined with care. ■He . welcomed all that had been said in the Governor's Speech, though some of the proposals whicli.it advanced might ba discovered to bs impracticable. It was unfair to say that this was a belated attempt, iu view of the election. It was only by experience that the amendments necessary in the law 1 could bo discovered. The verdict of the people was not against the legislation cf the Government nor against the increaso of indebtedness in this countrv. The country was hotter able (o bear its debt to-day than it -was to bear the debt of 20 years ago at that time. Instead of being responsible for the increased cost of living the Government had dene a great deal to assist the poorer section of the community to meet this increased cost.- The trend throughout the whole of the Liberal Administration had been to remit'indirect (Customs) taxation and impose the burden on direct taxation. Considering all that had been done it was' remarkable that no more taxation had been imposed. Much useful work had been accomplished in this' country by the' union of Liberal and Labour forces. There were cries.of "Divide" from the Opposition side when Mr. Sidey sat down, and had been duly-.applauded.
