Tho Hon. Captain Baillie, who has just celebrated his 85th anniversary, was entertained by tho members of the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. Mr. G. L. Banuatync, director of Messrs. Bannatyne and Hunter, Ltd., of Victoria Street, who is about to leave on a combined business and pleasure trip round the world, has received a handsome presentation from those associated with hint in business. Eulogistic references were made to Mr. Bnminryne's business, and personal qualities by' Mr. 11. C. Hunter, who made the presentation, and by Mr. S. Mace, the secretary of tho company. When applications wero invited for the position of Administrator of the Northern Territory of Australia, the salary stated was .€ISOO, bat before the Federal Government could secure the services of Professor Gilruth, the emoluments of the office had to be increased to ■£1750, with .£SOO a year for expenses. The term of the appointment is five years. In Chambers yesterday, Mr. P. W. Jackson, solicitor, was admitted a barrister of the Supreme Court by his Honour 11 r. Justice .Sim, on tho motion of Mr, I'. Levi; Mr. 1\ .(,. G. West, on tiie motion of Mr. A. I'. Meelc. was admitted a barrister and solicitor; and Mr. L. L. ITitehinu's, mi the motion of 11 r. Sir. 11. Fallen, a brother of Mr. James Patten, the erstwhile American "WheatKing," has arrived in Sydney from America (slates a Press Association message). Ho declares he has no intention of cornering tho market or doing business in Australia. America, he adds, is quite a big enough field. Sir. Bertram W. Slillwr has been appointed chief cleric in the Marine Department. The Nov. John A. Lush (Anglican) and (he ftcv. F. ft. Blue and Mr. George Ireland (Presbyterian) are gazetted as officiating minisicrs under the Marriage Act. »r. J. M. Bell, late director of the geological survey of Now Zealand, in a letter lo Mr. A. E. Watkins, New Plymouth, says he has lately been reporting upon mining propositions in Siberia. Morgan has been appointed Resident Agent of the Government mid postmaster at I'enrhyn Ishead; Sir. K. FHnivkc at Aitufaki; and Sir. John Sl'Cu - loch at Slauke. All are within tho Cook Group. The Government has appointed Messsrs. John Foster, G. Griffiths, J. H. Greenwood, A. C. Hansen, .1. ft. Powell, .las. Scanlon, and J). J. Williams members of the Wcslport Harbour Board for a term of two years. The Wangamii Labour party have selected Councillor James T. Sluir as its representative to contest the Mayoralty Captain ftodgers, one of the oldest nautical identities in New Zealand, dioil at his son's residence, Upper Hutt, on Wednesday evening. The late Captain ftodgers was aged 81 and was a native of Ireland, lie went to sea us a boy, and was, for many years, Government pilot at Hokitika during the old digging days. From Hokitika he was transferred to the Wnirau Bar as pilot, and there ho was stationed for twenty years, until ho retired a few years ago. Sir. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of tho Bank of New Zealand, will leave London by the I'. and 0. liner Slnlwa for Sydney on SI arch 8. Sir. Beauchamp will join the New Zealand steamer at Sydney for Wellington, and will probably arrive here on April 18. Sir. J. ft. Palmer, town clerk of tho City Corporation, has been granted leave of absence to visit Australia. His official duties will, in the interim, be carried out by Sir. K. Tail, ns acting-town clerk. Sir. J. P. Luke, and Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald, G. Frost, D. M'Laren, and .1. Smith, have been appointed by the Wellington City Council to the Board of Managers of the Wellington Technical School Board. On Slonday evening the members of tho Itangiora Fire Brigade presented Sir. W. T. Wilson with a gold pendant, suitably inscribed, on the occasion of his retirement from , the brigade lifter twenty-six years' service. .
